Car Theft in the Denver Metro: Comprehensive Coverage and Colorado’s Felony Law

A few years ago, Colorado had one of the highest auto theft rates in the country. The picture has improved. According to the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority’s 2025 annual report, statewide thefts fell 34% in 2025 compared with 2024, the third straight year of declines. Thousands of vehicles are still stolen each year, though.

What Changed Under Colorado Law

Senate Bill 23-097, which took effect July 1, 2023, reworked how motor vehicle theft is charged in Colorado. Before the change, penalties were tied to the stolen vehicle’s value. Now they depend on the circumstances of the crime, and motor vehicle theft is charged as a felony. The law also created a separate offense for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Your Coverage Questions, Answered

Which coverage pays if my car is stolen?

Comprehensive coverage typically handles theft. If you carry only liability coverage, your policy generally won’t pay to replace or repair your own stolen vehicle.

What if the car is recovered but damaged?

Comprehensive often helps with damage from the theft, such as broken windows, a damaged ignition, or missing parts, subject to your deductible.

Are belongings inside the car covered?

Personal items are usually covered by a homeowners or renters policy rather than auto insurance, subject to that policy’s terms.

Will I have a rental car?

Only if your policy includes rental reimbursement or transportation coverage.

What to Do After a Theft

  1. Report the theft to local police right away
  2. Contact your insurer with the police report number
  3. Gather your title, keys, VIN, and any tracking information
  4. Notify your lender if the vehicle is financed

Lowering the Risk

  • Never leave a car running unattended on cold mornings
